We will be comparing the Sunset Sound Console to the Universal Audio LUNA DAW. Designed for seamless integration with Apollo audio interfaces, LUNA is UAD's free Mac‑based recording application that lets you do music recording, audio editing, composition, sound design, and more ‑ all in real time, and with big analog studio sound. Few studios in the world have contributed as much to the sonic imprint of music culture as Los Angeles’ Sunset Sound Studio. Sunset Sound Recordings was opened in 1958 by Tutti Camarata, then director of recording for Disney Studios. The space’s slanted floor and uneven walls gave it ideal acoustics, and soon the studio was busy recording Disney classics like “Mary Poppins”. All the rooms and equipment have been carefully maintained since their construction in the early 60s, so their sonic imprint has remained exactly the same as they were when Sunset’s iconic sessions were tracked. Some plugins can take up as much as 74%!! It gets expensive quick to run some of these plugins. 🤍 Why UAD Plugins are worth it? 1.Closets to the Hardware A lot of the UAD Plugins are like 80% to 90% of the real thing at a fraction of the cost. They do a great job of modeling the real deal hardware. Before going to Audio School I bought $20,000 of Outboard and got rid of all it after going to Blackbird… Except for my Distressor. - Most of the gear they model will run you anywhere from $1000 to $50,000. Even if the UAD Fairchild is 70% of the real thing, That’s still great for a $300 plugin. 2. You can record in real-time with Plugins with a Universal Audio Interface That means you don’t need external preamps or compressor for recording vocals. - A nice mic pre and compressor will cost around $1000 combined. UAD Plugin should do the job. 3. Free Updates You pay top dollar for these plugins and the updates are free. If you upgrade your computer or operating system you don’t have to pay to update these plugins Side-note, They do create New Versions of plugins like the 1176 or LA2A and you will have to pay for the new version. 4. Sales in December and June They have two yearly sales with massive discounts and bundles on almost any plugins you want. 5. Free DAW New Universal Audio Interfaces come with Luna for Free They are still working out the kinks, but it gives you a place to start. The Downside of UAD Plugins It’s the country club, You have to own either a Universal Audio Interface or a UAD Satellite. It’s like an entry fee into the UAD world. Outside of the twice a year sales, these plugins are expensive. You only get so much DSP with each device and the newer plugins are DSP Monsters. You have to pick and choose your spots when mixing with UAD plugins unless you plan on buying more hardware to add DSP, there will be a limit to how many UAD plugins you can mix with. Bonus Tip!! I use the Fatso on every mix, the API 2500 feel so much closer to the real hardware over the Waves Plugins. The Distressor is really close as well 2. Waves or UAD? For Modeling Hardware UAD is crushing it. They definitely come close with a lot of the feel and sound. I have been disappointed with the Chandler Limited Zener. 3. Waves is doing some really cool stuff with creating new and unique plugins. You do need to beware that whenever you need to update your computer or OS you will most likely have to pay the Waves Update Plan.
