Join me on Rarible! 🤍 Let's share some #NFT work. Welcome to a new Video 4 tutorial. In this video I will show you how to create some weird looking shapes with bevel deformers inside Cinema 4D. So let’s start. First we create a sphere. Then, we change the type from standard to icosahedron. Turn down the amount of polygons from 24 to 12, and we’re done with the sphere. Now let’s create a bevel deformer. Select both the bevel deformer and the sphere and add then to a null object by pressing Alt G on your keyboard. Do not parent the bevel deformer to the sphere, this makes it easier later on when you want to use other shapes. Next we change the component mode from edges to polygons, and set the bevel mode to proportional. Switch to the Polygon Extrusion tab and change the Extrusion from 10 centimeters to 0. Make sure Preserve Groups is switched off. When we go back to the Option tab and let’s see what happens when we use the Offset slider. That looks great. Let’s set it to 30% for now. Now you wan’t to copy the bevel deformer and paste it above our Null Object. Group the Null and the copied bevel deformer into a new null object by pressing Alt G. By copying and grouping the bevel deformer we added a extra layer of polygons to our sphere. Do the same trick again to add a third layer of polygons. Now let’s give this guy some depth. Go down to our first created bevel deformer, select Poly Extrusion and change it from 0 to 5 centimeters. Then go to the second bevel deformer en set the Poly Extrusion to 5 centimeter as well. Do the same trick to our last deformer. Maybe use 2 centimeters instead of 5 for this one. This looks great. Now we want to animate this guy so let’s create a animation controller. We change the name of our main Null object to Bevel controller. Navigate down to User data and click on Add User Data. Now change the name of the controller to anything you want. Let’s just name it Bevel. Hit OK and we created a controller that we can animate. But nothing is happening off course. We need to map the controller to our bevel deformers. Let’s add a XPresso tag to our main null object. Now simply drag the Bevel deformer, our main null object, to our XPresso grid and then right mouse click to set the output to our newly created controller called Bevel. Then select all three bevel deformers and drag then inside our XPresso grid as well. Let’s organise them a bit Now let’s see what parameter we want to animatie. In this case it’s the Offset parameter. Now we will link the Bevel output to the Offset parameters from our bevel deformers. Simply drag a line to the blue square and navigate down to Option and Offset. Repeat the same steps to the two other bevel deformers. And we’re done! You’ve probably noticed that our subdivisions disappeared on our sphere. That’s because our newly created controller is still set to the default of 0%. The new Caps and Bevels introduced in Cinema 4D R21 include a collection of bevel presets. Toggle Separate Bevel Controls to adjust the start and end separately or simultaneously. Use Curve mode to access Spline Presets and also to adjust and create custom bevels using a spline user interface. More info: 🤍

In this video, we’re going to talk about how to use the bevel modifier in Blender to round off your edges in your models! This can be key for making your models more realistic, as a slight bevel makes things look less “fake” in a 3D sense. MORE BLENDER MODIFIER TUTORIALS 🤍 Let’s start by taking a look at some of the functions contained inside the bevel tool using the most simple example – a cube. When we apply the bevel modifier to the cube, the first thing you’ll notice is that it applies to all the edges and vertices in the object. You can’t really use it to bevel individual edges. At its base level, the bevel modifier will take all the edges in the object and bevel them off. See how you get flat faces on all the vertices and the corners? Now, let’s look at some of the ways we can modify the bevel. Offset – controls the width of the bevel, or how far the bevel goes Note there are options for beveling based on offset length, object width, percent, and more. Check only vertices to only bevel corners Segments – controls the number of segments created – more = more curved, less = less curved Profile sets if your bevels go in or out Material allows you to apply a different material to your bevels than your base faces Now let’s look at some other situations/examples Notice that if you apply a bevel modifier to a shape like our two boxes here, it bevels both the outer and inner edges – good for creating transitions. Clamp overlap will keep your faces from overlapping – if you don’t do this, it can get messy. If we bevel this extruded circle, notice that it’s also beveling the intersecting edges in the middle and creating a lot of extra geometry? You can limit this by changing your limit method to “angle.” This will set it so only edges over a certain angle will be beveled, letting you control how things are beveled. That’s a general overview of the way the bevel modifier works. Now, let’s discuss a bit about some of the reasons you’d use a modifier instead of the actual bevel tool. Actual tool – creates the actual geometry in your model. Highly helpful for when you need to use the bevel tool to add loop cuts. The modifier, on the other hand, doesn’t add geometry. If you select the object and hit the tab key, you can see the original geometry. Modifier – keeps things simple. You can go back and edit your original geometry and your beveled shape will adjust along with it.

So let's dig into the new caps and bevels in our 21, and I'm going to use a MoTeC subject cause that's kind of like the most obvious use case for the new capstan bevels, but keep in mind that you can also access these same cap controls and cap updates in extrudes or sweeps here. So I'll cover that a little bit later, but just want you to be aware that the new caps in bevels are not just limited to mow techs. EJ Hassenfratz (01:10): Okay. So I'm just going to delete those too, but let's go ahead and dig in here. And one of the biggest things is if I want to have just a rounded bevel, this is kind of the default, uh, bevel shape. I just go in just click and drag and adjust this size and you see, we have a nice rounded bevel and it's applied to the front and the back. Now you might think like, oh, woopty, do what's the big deal with that? Actually, that's pretty huge because if you remember in our 20 and below, let me just jump into our 20 here. If you wanted to add a nice round bevel to the front and back of your, uh, Motech subject, you have to go into the caps and remember the start and end caps were separated and you'd have to go to fill it cap on the one, fill the cap on the other one. EJ Hassenfratz (01:54): And if you wanted to adjust each of these options, you'd have to do that for each of the start and end. So it was a lot of just manually changing things, making sure that everything was kind of matching. And there's just so many settings that you had to take care of. Meanwhile, in our 21, they're fused together, they're mirrored. You can control both your start and end caps at once and get really nice. Bevels really easily. Okay. But if you want to have those separate bevel controls, you can still separate them by just checking on the separate bevel controls. And you can go knock yourself out by applying different bevels on your front and back end. So that's a big like quality of life, kind of a enhancer there. Um, but one thing that's really cool is we have the size here. We can adjust the shape depth so we can actually get like more of an inner bevel kind of going on. EJ Hassenfratz (02:47): So you can see here, nice concave kind of deal there. We can also adjust the segments. And again, this is going to control both the segments on the front and back. If I just go into my, uh, garage shading lines, you can see all those segments there and there's the shape depth I can get this really nice concave bevel or, you know, bloated out a convex bevel, lot more control there. Uh, another cool thing is the ability to get a step type of bevel shape. And let me just get out of garage shading lines here and here, you can see that we have all these different segments or steps of that stepped bevel shape. So we can go like really cool, like art deco kind of thing, and adjust the size here. And you're going to see that we have this a new way to calculate the, uh, bevels here. How to easily mode objects involving different types of extrusions in Cinema 4D. An extrude can be used of a surface, point or edge for any object that's in the edit mode. Simply select it with the selection tool and right-click to see all the modeling and manipulation options available.
