SNMP is a standardized protocol used to collect and organise device information on a network. It does this over UDP port 161 (Traps are received on port 162). There are three versions of SNMP. - SNMPv1 which is the original version of SNMP - SNMPv2c – This is the revised version which introduced some enhancements. Most notably the use of community strings for security. You can think of a community string like a password. - SNMPv3 – Which is another improvement adding authentication and encryption. This version is much more secure than the previous versions. A device that is SNMP enabled is known as an agent. An SNMP agent has several objects that can be interacted with. Some objects are part of the industry standard, and some will be vendor-specific for this device. For example, this router will have objects for, name, uptime, interfaces, and the routing table to name just a few. Each object is assigned an object identifier or OID. The OID is a sequence of numbers, which at first glance can look like an IP address. This is used to identify the object in a file called a MIB which stands for Management Information Base. To interact with these object, we need something called a network management system or NMS. The NMS is a piece of software that can communicate with the SNMP agent. There are a few ways the NMS can speak to the agent. The first way is by using GET requests. Get message include get, getNext and getBulk. They are used to actively request information from the agent. The second way we can talk to an agent is by using SET requests. A set request is used to change a value on the agent. The last method I want to talk about is Traps and Informs. Agents use traps and informs to actively communicate with the NMS. The agent can send a trap or inform to the NMS when an event occurs on the device. Traps and informs are two different types of massage but they both do the same thing. The difference is that informs are reliable. An inform message will wait for an acknowledgement from the NMS. If it doesn’t receive one, it will resend the inform. A trap on the other hand is sent and then forgotten. Even though informs are consider reliable, both still use UDP. #ccna #cisco #networking

2.9 SNMP - Simple Network Management Protocol


Module 2 – Footprinting (Reconnaissance) Section 2.9 SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol). SNMP is a protocol for collecting/modifying information about managed devices/node. – Devices that support SNMP include routers, switches, servers etc. – SNMP is widely used in network monitoring – SNMP exposes management data in the form of variables in MIB – Strong password must be used in SNMP authentication keys – SNMP operates in the OSI Layer 7 and works on UDP ports 161 and 162 – Secure SNMP / TLS/DTLS ports 10161, 10162 – The agent may generate notifications from any available port. – SNMP v3 is latest version in use SNMP Communication – In SNMP communication, one or more administrative computers called managers monitoring or managing a group of hosts or devices. Each managed system/node has an agent which reports information via SNMP to the manager. An SNMP-managed network consists of: • Managed device/node • Agent software which runs on managed devices. • Network management station/system (NMS) software which runs on the manager. MIB (Management information base) • MIB is a database of the objects that can be managed on a device like router, switch, firewall etc. • MIB describe the structure of the management data of a device subsystem contains OID and metadata. SNMP agents expose management data on the managed systems as variables SNMP PDU types • GetRequest - A manager-to-agent request • SetRequest - A manager-to-agent • GetNextRequest - A manager-to-agent request • GetBulkRequest - similar to GetNextRequest • Response - agent to manager • Trap - agent to manager on an event • InformRequest - agent/manager to manager comm. SNMP Versions • SNMPv1 specifies five core protocol data units (PDUs) • SNMPv2/2c – five core PDUs + GetBulkRequest and InformRequest PDUs • SNMPv3 – 7 PDUs above + Report PDU SNMPv2c is incompatible with SNMPv1 and they are interoperable with: – Proxy agents – NMS which understand both versions SNMPv3 provides important security features of CIA: • Confidentiality – Encryption of packets to prevent snooping by an unauthorized source. • Integrity – To ensure that a packet has not been tampered while in transit. • Availability – communication is done with optimum performance. Autodiscovery • SNMP discovers new devices in the network automatically. • SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c is less secure than SNMP v3. SNMP MIB – OID Example • (ciscoEnvMonTemperatureStatusValue) present in CISCO-ENVMON-MIB shows the actual chassis temperature. Snmpcheck is an open source tool which automates the process of gathering information of any devices with SNMP protocol support. useful for penetration testing or systems monitoring. snmpcheck is installed on Kali Linux by default and also part of Metasploit framework. snmp-check allows you to enumerate the SNMP devices and places the output in a user friendly format.
